An ICT-in-Science training workshop was held at Livingstone High on Wednesday 4 February 2009. The workshop was attended by Ashley, Lamida, Julia, Wardah, Zarina and Harry – all very enthusiastic members of the Life Sciences Department at the school and all receptive to the integrated use of technology in curriculum delivery.
The workshop focused on how to use the Data Harvest Sensors in the teaching of Life Science. The simple procedure of connecting the components (a logger and temperature and heart rate sensors) to the PC was demonstrated. The training progressed to the actual use of the equipment which is controlled by the accompanying EasySense software. The Life Science teachers spent a fun afternoon using the heart rate sensor and temperature sensor to measure aspects of their own physiology. Creative ideas about how the equipment could be used to develop a scientific approach to solving questions of a biological nature were enthusiastically brainstormed.
The training was hands-on, with teachers handling the sensors and the software on the PC. The presence of a Hitachi EIWB was a bonus as it allowed the entire group (and by extension the class when present) to see the data being
